Sponsorships
As part of our environmental commitment, ASL is proud to support
the work of the Peace River Refuge in Florida. In particular we
sponsor rescued bear Elizabeth Rose, pictured above.
Elizabeth Rose is a baby American black bear that arrived at Peace
River Refuge & Ranch at the age of 4 months. She was extremely
underweight, malnourished and full of parasites, with a nasty
bacterial infection. She was originally purchased from a breeder
by a man in Ohio who planned to keep her as a pet for his 10 year
old son. She was living in his bathroom when he realized that
it required welding gloves to feed a bottle to her, so he put
her on a diet of apple sauce and honey. As she grew ill, he listed
her for sale on the internet, threatening to put her in a tasty
stew if he didnt sell her.
A group of animal rights activists rallied; they purchased her
and contacted our sanctuary. We agreed to accept her and she
was flown to Florida immediately. She has now recovered from
all of the illnesses she was fighting; her weak bones are strong
again and she is in a habitat with an oak tree to climb. When
she is almost full grown, she will be introduced to three other
black bears in a habitat that is over an acre in size. They will
live out their lives in the safety of our sanctuary.
The sanctuary is dedicated to the lifetime care of abused, neglected,
confiscated or unwanted exotic animals to prevent them from being
destroyed. To find out more about their work, you can go to www.peaceriverrefuge.org
